Through a survey, I identified some challenges faced by students in freshman composition courses and explored solutions based on survey responses and a review of the efforts of other educators. Problems seem to be partially attributable to a pedagogical gap between high school and college. Recommendations include integrating college-style assignments into high school courses (while still addressing high school standards) and increasing collaboration between high school teachers and college instructors. Increased collaboration will enhance the authenticity of the college-style assignments and provide teachers with an opportunity to reflect and improve methods.
