Writing within the science classroom can be very tricky for middle level students. Mastering technical vocabulary within the sciences allows for students to build confidence during application of critical thinking skills. However, students sometimes find it difficult to grasp scientific concepts due to complex vocabulary, therefore writing can become cumbersome for the struggling student. Relating vocabulary to ideas and concepts is essential in the writing process (Irvin et. al, 2007. Pp. 99). Three strategies for improving students’ mastery of scientific vocabulary will strengthen students writing skills in the science classroom.
